Pivoting Into Tech

Anya joined Trustpower this summer as a Software Developer. She’s truly found her place in tech, and we can’t wait to share her story!

How did you come into your summer internship?

I was a stay-at-home mum for 6 years and didn’t really know what I wanted to do. It came to a point where I needed to be doing something for myself. I wanted a career. I always knew I was interested in computers but didn’t know where to start. I took a six-month career and study prep course at Toi Ohomai to better understand what interested me with regards to a career. They helped us to understand ways to get on the right path - what to study, who to get in touch with etc. I then completed my degree in computer science there, and I applied to Summer of Tech as a graduate.

Why did you choose TrustPower?

I only applied to two internships. I felt comfortable at Trustpower right away. The culture seemed great, and everyone was all smiles during the interview! They accommodate for everything. I have kids, so I was only looking for a role in Tauranga. I applied for two internships, but as soon as I met Trustpower I knew it was the right choice. It was also familiar territory - while I was at Toi Ohomai, we toured Trustpower. I remember thinking I wanted to work there, two and a half years ago! You could tell it was an awesome place to work, the people I talked to were beaming.

What are you working on during your internship?

We’re creating an app for the Trustpower employees. They have an ABW (activity-based workspace). They don’t have set desks, so when they need to find a space available for their meeting or stand-up, they use an app. That’s what I’ve been developing during my internship.

What has been your favourite part about pivoting into tech?

I’ve found something for me. I’m 29 and have dabbled in a bit of everything, but no career really stuck. When I got into tech I finally felt like I had found what I was supposed to be doing! I like everything about it - it’s changing all the time. There’s so much to learn and so many different pathways. The opportunities are endless!

How did you find Summer of Tech’s application process?

It was awesome. I would not have had the opportunity to get my foot in the door without Summer of Tech!

Thank you Anya for sharing your experience with us. If you’re a student/recent grad looking to dive into tech like Anya, we encourage you to register with Summer of Tech here!
