2024 Summer of Tech Volunteer Events: delivering impact and support in a tough job market

Summer of Tech events are in full swing for 2024, here’s a quick update on what we’ve been up to since March, alongside our team of amazing volunteers who have helped us support 407 students and graduates from 31 different tertiaries.

Summer of Tech bootcamps are short, informational, inspirational workshops on career and technical topics. Sometimes the presenters are the Summer of Tech team, but we are supported by volunteers from industry who want to share their knowledge, build skills and support students and graduates with the things they need to kick start their careers in the tech industry.

Our events kick off in March each year, and culminate in our recruitment events in September. From March-May, we’ve delivered 14 events to 407 unique attendees.

Career bootcamp topics so far have included CVs, career inspiration and storytelling. Code bootcamps so far have covered security, AI, web accessibility, docker and cloud technologies.

Event attendees by region (March-May 2024)

Most of our events are online, and we’re reaching attendees from Northland to Invercargill, and everywhere in between.

We have a very engaged cohort of candidates this year, our event attendees are studying or recently graduated from 30 different tertiary institutions.

Our team, alongside alumni volunteers, have been out and about at career fairs, we’ve attended 7 campus events so far this year. It’s been interesting to note the different levels of attendance and engagement by employers and job-seeking students across the motu. Thanks to everyone who’s helped out at a career fair, and everyone who came to say “hi” and find out more about Summer of Tech.

Want to join our volunteer team? If you’ve got experience and support to share with the next generation of Aotearoa’s tech talent?
